New Years, man.

Before i begin, let me just say that new years here kicked ass. i cant begin, even, to really explain to you how much fun i had ushering in the new year. for my friends, this was another boring new years in bensheim, but for an exchange student, it was by far, the best night here.

and so the oceans turned.

i began by setting out alone into town, with a heavy packpack and my brand new hat. i didnt know what i was going to do yet, as no one had called me, but in town, i received a text message from Julian and was told to meet him in 45 minutes. for those 45 minutes, i went around trying to take pictures of fireworks, because see, the thing here with new years is lots of fireworks.



finally i ran into a HUGE group of kids from school, interlaced with friends of mine. we stood around waiting, and some kids began already.

here is Sven, holding tourches that, they claimed, were bought with money that went to the flood victims.


the kids instantly started blowing things up and here is a picture of people running away from a rather large firecracker.



shortly before 12, the rally cry was called and we made our way to the parking garage. i didnt know why exactly at first, and we all just stood around. it was a relatively warm evening, as well.



i didnt take pictures of the show, but i took videos. it was so great. people yelling at 12 or rather, 0:00, and for 15 minutes, bottle rockets up all over the city and we could see it. little explosions surrounded us as we yooped and hollared and did things that mothers fear.

i stayed with henning for a while, but we separated and i made my way in the direction of home with some other kids. parties ended and we were stuck on the street, until someone decided to climb the mountain, and we spent the first early morning of 2005 looking over the city at night.



i was a happy kid, as Julian and I walked slowly home.

next, my trip to Frankfurt with Karla, the Mexican exchange student.

CCC (Crazy Catholic Christmas)

turned out not so bad. All day they (on the 24th) cooked, and i took lots of walks outside. and then they said that i could "go get ready" which means to go put on the best stuff you got, and then the little bell rung and we were supposed to get downstairs, but i didnt know we were supposed to wear shoes too as we usually are not allowed to wear shoes in the house, so there was some laughter and "AGHHH"`s (christmas is ruined!!!) as i struggled to put on my shoes.

here we go.

first we sang some. i liked singing because once my voice got warmed up, i was pretty good, and i would hold the book up to my chest and sing and my host brother said it was funny. good.

then we heard a christmas story each adult and a christmas poem from Julian, my host brother. in the middle of it, he stopped, and said, "this is shit, im not doing it, its too embarassing"

i really tried to keep from laughing, but it was so wonderful. he was my hero that night, with the protest against all the christmas crap. my protest included opening my advents calendar randomly. but his was so great. soooooo great.

then we opened presents, which means everyone sort of stands around, and the presents you got for people, you have to give out yourself. which meant that for a while, no one got any from me, since i didnt catch on.

this was when they were showing me what the appropriate and unappropriate things to do at the dinner table after you are finished. i am exaggerating an appropriate thing. an unappropriate thing, for example, would be to put your head in both hands, or to not put your utensils at the 5 oclock position, dude.


one of Noras wonderful presents to me. beats robots, id say.


a picture done by me. the first, i think. the christmas tree was conservatively ornamented, but was pretty. it went up first on the 24th as well, so no christmas tree for a month or anything. i think its there until the 6th. or sommat.

after presents we went to church, where i sang more and louder, but will not be doing so in the near or distant future again. i was just trying to get into it, and "show interest in the family". but it made it better.

and then we all walked home and i went out.

next morning, on the 25th, we got up, and to "make me feel more at home" we opened some presents like we do at home, in pajamas, before breakfast. then we ate breakfast in our pajamas listening to the muppets and raffi. was very wonderful, but...

i will tell you i cant wait for good old calm, not too important christmas with my real parents next year. and my real friends.

Some More Ski Stuff

I had christmas, but it wasnt really that bad. sorry for the build up.
I still have to get pictures from my host brother so i can put some up of me. but here is some stuff i had sent to me:

Well, I Feel Silly

Ah, the ski tour to the italian alps.
So me and some thai kids,
,
decided to go skiing.

we took a bus.


we stayed in a hotel. it was very basic, but comfortable, with 6 people to my room. i didnt mind, this time.

every morning we would eat the same thing for breakfast and then get to the mountain with a "ski bus". a major theme of rotary tour is waiting.

i skied with two other guys. we did it all laid back, with plenty of breaks and plenty of goofing off.

the whole week i didnt shower ::bows:: because it was just too much of a hastle. i think going to the sauna counted, though.


the coolest thing about my outfit was that i had a huge jacket which made me look kinda round, a backpack, a sweet hat, and bell bottom ski pants provided by my host family. they also gave me skis and boots and poles, which was really awesome.


so awesome.

have you ever had vegimite? its an australian thing made by kraft to smear on bread. tasted like eggplant, i thought.


this is me and David, pronounced Dahveed, from mexico. we won a race thing the whole group did. a prize of a bottle of wine was awarded. ill get pictures of the race later from someone else.

in the evenings we would sometimes go out.

basically, this was the greatest week i have had in Europe so far. it was just so much fun to talk in english and to make jokes and laugh until i was crying and i just dont have that anymore here. it was certainly sad to leave it, but i made some great friends that i will go visit soon.
